India–Israel FTA talks could unlock dairy tech transfer, quality standards and new export opportunities for India’s livestock and dairy sectors.
India–Israel FTA Poised to Boost Dairy & Livestock
Divya Kumar Gulati, Chairman, CLFMA of India

CLFMA’s strategic case for tech transfer, quality standards and export expansion.

India’s talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) with Israel could mark a turning point for the country’s livestock and dairy sectors, according to industry leader Divya Kumar Gulati. With Israel’s advanced precision dairy farming, animal genetics and water-efficient systems, proponents see the pact as an opportunity to bring cutting-edge technology to Indian producers. Gulati argues that targeted Centres of Excellence could help double per-animal yields and cut water use for fodder and cleaning by 40–60%, simultaneously reducing animal mortality via early disease detection.

From a trade perspective, aligning food safety and animal health standards between India and Israel under the FTA is seen as essential to unlocking export potential. Israel’s stringent quality norms could serve as a gateway for Indian dairy, livestock and aquaculture products — especially those seeking Kosher certification — to gain footholds in premium markets. Gulati suggests that India could not only import Israeli technology and genetics but also export processed livestock feed and niche meats in a balanced trade model that benefits both economies.

Improving quality standards is central to India’s broader livestock ambitions. Analysts emphasize that better animal health protocols and harmonized safety requirements can enhance the competitiveness of Indian products abroad, helping the sector move beyond traditional domestic demand. This focus on quality also dovetails with India’s efforts to address longstanding productivity gaps, particularly in dairy yields and feed efficiency, which have limited export-oriented growth.

The envisioned FTA could complement ongoing global collaborations that India’s livestock sector is pursuing. For instance, CLFMA of India has recently led delegations to the United States to study best practices in dairy production, feed innovation and sustainable agriculture, reflecting a broader push for international knowledge exchange and technological adaptation. These engagements underline how trade deals and strategic partnerships can work in tandem to modernize India’s animal agriculture landscape.

For international dairy producers, manufacturers and analysts, the India–Israel FTA discussion underscores a pivotal moment: one that blends cutting-edge production technology with global market access strategies. If effectively negotiated, such an agreement could help India’s livestock and dairy sectors leapfrog quality constraints, integrate advanced farming systems and tap into new export corridors, reshaping their role in global dairy economics.
