Indian minister says dairy development is vital for Melghat’s socio-economic progress, boosting incomes and rural livelihoods.
Dairy Development Key to Melghat’s Growth

Gadkari champions milk sector investment to drive socio-economic progress in central India.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari has underscored the pivotal role of dairy development in bolstering the socio-economic foundations of the Melghat region in Maharashtra. Speaking at a public event in Nagpur, Gadkari emphasised that dairy can be a catalyst for rural transformation by stabilising incomes, enhancing nutritional outcomes and creating employment opportunities in one of India’s most vulnerable districts.

Gadkari highlighted that dairy projects contribute to poverty alleviation by enabling marginal and tribal farmers to participate in formal milk markets and benefit from consistent returns. He pointed out that increased dairy activity can help diversify rural livelihoods, reduce dependence on rain-fed agriculture and integrate local producers into broader value chains — a dynamic relevant to dairy analysts tracking rural economic linkages.

Improving dairy infrastructure — including collection, cooling and processing facilities — was a key theme of his address. Gadkari called for investments that strengthen milk handling capacity, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance quality for processors and end markets. This infrastructure focus aligns with strategies aimed at improving returns for producers and reducing barriers to entry for smallholder dairy suppliers.

The minister also stressed the importance of capacity building and veterinary support to elevate herd productivity and animal health. By supporting training programmes, extension services and livestock care initiatives, policymakers hope to lift milk yields per animal — a metric closely watched by industry analysts and dairy economists as a determinant of regional competitiveness.

For international dairy stakeholders, Melghat’s dairy push represents a microcosm of how targeted agricultural investment can influence rural development and market growth. By combining infrastructure upgrades with knowledge transfer and market access initiatives, the region aims to build a more resilient dairy sector capable of contributing to broader regional progress.
