India sustains its lead as the world’s largest milk producer with rapid growth, higher per-capita consumption and rising rural dairy impact.
India Tops Global Milk Output with Rapid Growth

Government data shows sustained expansion, rising per-capita consumption and dairy’s rising role in nutrition and rural livelihoods.

India has retained its position as the world’s largest milk producer, generating nearly 25 % of global output, according to the Government of India’s recent release. Over the past decade, the sector has recorded a compound annual growth rate of about 6 %, with production jumping from 146 million tonnes in 2014-15 to over 247 million tonnes in 2024-25 — a surge of more than 69 %. This growth underscores the scale and resilience of India’s dairy industry on the global stage.

Government data highlights that the sustained rise in milk production has had tangible nutritional benefits for India’s population. Per-capita milk availability reached 485 grams per day in 2024-25, significantly above the global average of 328 grams, reflecting improved dietary access. This trend is particularly notable in a country where milk serves as a key source of protein in predominantly lacto-vegetarian diets.

Dairy’s growth isn’t just about quantity; it’s also reshaping rural economies and allied agricultural sectors. Expansion in livestock, dairy, poultry and fisheries has bolstered agricultural Gross Value Added (GVA) and helped sustain employment in rural regions. These sectors together form a cornerstone of India’s agrarian economy, supporting millions of smallholder farmers and contributing to broader socioeconomic stability.

The country’s long-term leadership in milk production stems from decades of focused policy support and structural development. From Operation Flood — the White Revolution that transformed India into a dairy powerhouse — to ongoing infrastructure and cooperative initiatives, the sector continues to innovate and scale. Modernization of supply chains and livestock productivity should remain focal points to sustain growth and boost value-added dairy processing.

For the international dairy community, India’s performance offers both opportunities and challenges. Its dominant share of world milk output provides scale advantages, yet questions about organized supply conversion, quality standards, and export competitiveness remain key areas for future development. As global demand for dairy proteins rises, India’s dairy trajectory will be a critical factor shaping global dairy market dynamics.
