Government data shows strong milk and livestock output gains in Chhattisgarh under national development programs.

The Government of India, through the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, outlined the implementation and performance of several flagship rural development schemes aimed at expanding fishery, livestock and dairy sectors, including in the State of Chhattisgarh. These initiatives — such as Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), National Livestock Mission (NLM), Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) and dedicated Dairy Development Programmes — seek to strengthen production, value chains and livelihoods in agrarian communities.

Under PMMSY in Chhattisgarh, fish seed production more than doubled, rising from 288 crore to 583 crore units between 2019-20 and 2024-25, while total fish production increased significantly by about 52.6%, delivering expanded aquaculture capacity and boosting incomes for local producers. This growth underscores the impact of targeted investment in fishery infrastructure, including hatcheries and feed mills constructed under the scheme.

The Rashtriya Gokul Mission and allied dairy interventions have contributed to a notable rise in milk production in Chhattisgarh, moving from 11.82 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 20.76 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. This sustained production increase supports dairy sector income growth and reinforces household nutrition security and rural employment opportunities across the state.

The press release details broad implementation metrics — such as hundreds of projects sanctioned under livestock support schemes, artificial inseminations performed, livestock coverage, and training of rural beneficiaries — indicating the scale of nationwide efforts to enhance livestock productivity and dairy output. Emphasis was placed on benefiting women and marginalized communities, reflecting policy goals to foster inclusive rural development.

To ensure effective execution of these complex programmes, the government and state authorities have established multi-layered monitoring and evaluation frameworks, including real-time digital systems to track financial utilization and physical progress. Regular third-party evaluations inform corrective actions, helping to sustain momentum and refine strategy for long-term growth in fisheries, livestock and dairy sectors.
