State government equips dairy farmers with mechanisation tools to cut fodder waste, boost milk yield and strengthen rural income.
Sikkim’s government has rolled out a targeted dairy sector support programme, distributing 104 power-operated chaff cutters to selected dairy farmers as part of its Feed and Fodder Cell initiative under the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) Department. The launch event, held at the Sikkim Livestock Development Board (SLDB) hall, emphasised efficient fodder utilisation as a foundation for sustainable livestock farming and income growth.
This mechanisation push directly tackles one of the dairy sector’s persistent challenges: fodder wastage. By providing power-operated chaff cutters, the programme aims to improve cattle nutrition, raise milk productivity and enhance overall milk quality—critical factors for producers looking to increase throughput and secure higher returns in a competitive market.
Beneficiaries were selected based on livestock holdings to ensure the equipment reaches farmers with the capacity to use it effectively and maximise its impact on production. Government officials stressed that this targeted approach aligns with Sikkim’s broader vision of strengthening rural livelihoods through practical, farm-level interventions that support both productivity and profitability.
Senior leaders including the Minister for Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services and the MLA from Martam–Rumtek Constituency highlighted the role of this initiative in reinforcing the dairy ecosystem by improving fodder management practices. They noted that better feed processing not only boosts yields but also contributes to improved animal health, a key driver for sustained sector growth.
The event’s high-level participation—from departmental secretaries to principal directors—reflects a collective commitment to modernising livestock farming and rural dairy economies in Sikkim. By focusing on mechanisation, efficient resource use, and farmer-centric policy implementation, the programme supports stronger, more resilient dairy value chains in the region.
