NDDB chair welcomes new funding, tax relief and rural initiatives to strengthen milk value chains.
The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has applauded a series of significant budgetary measures aimed at strengthening India’s dairy sector and allied animal husbandry services. In response to Union Budget 2026–27, NDDB Chairman Dr Meenesh Shah described the enhancements as a “big boost” that will directly support rural incomes, dairy cooperatives and livestock-related entrepreneurship. The augmented support reflects the government’s broader focus on agricultural growth and inclusive development.
One of the cornerstone moves involves a substantial increase in funding for animal husbandry, with an allocation of Rs 6,153.46 crore, marking a 16 % rise over the previous year. This uplift is expected to fortify infrastructure and services linked to dairy animal health, breeding and productivity — sectors that underpin India’s position as the world’s largest milk producer.
Tax relief for dairy cooperatives was another highlight welcomed by NDDB leadership. The expanded benefits now extend to cattle feed in addition to milk and other primary produce, which reduces tax burdens for milk unions and producer societies. Because primary dairy cooperatives sell millions of tonnes of cattle feed annually, the extension is anticipated to improve producer earnings and strengthen cooperative finances across India.
Beyond financial allocations, the budget also promotes rural entrepreneurship and employment through integrated schemes that support credit-linked subsidies for livestock enterprises. NDDB officials underscored that such schemes will modernise livestock value chains, bolster smallholder farmer participation, and create new jobs — tying economic growth in rural regions to dairy and allied industries.
The measures also include enhanced veterinary infrastructure and professional capacity building, with plans to add thousands of veterinary and para-veterinary professionals. This focus on animal health is expected to improve herd productivity, reduce disease risks and support long-term sustainability of dairy operations — a critical concern for producers navigating supply and quality challenges.
