Indian dairy leader teams with Maharashtra government to build large-scale milk processing plant.

Milky Mist Dairy Food Ltd, one of India’s leading value-added dairy processors, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra to establish a large-scale milk processing and dairy products manufacturing facility in the western state. The agreement was formalised at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, underscoring the global significance of dairy sector investment and strategic expansion.

Under the terms of the MoU, Milky Mist will build a milk processing plant with an initial capacity of 10 lakh litres per day (LLPD), designed for future expansion up to 25 LLPD as market demand and sourcing capacity grow. The product portfolio is set to include paneer, yogurt, curd, mozzarella cheese, ice cream, butter and ghee, aligning with trends toward value-added dairy products in both domestic and export markets.

The ₹1,130 crore investment is expected to generate around 800 direct jobs and support broader economic growth in the region’s dairy ecosystem. The facility will be developed in phases on a 48.15-acre site allotted by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), with milk procurement sourced locally from farmers across the state, strengthening farmer linkages and regional supply chains.

Founded in 1997, Milky Mist has grown from a regional processor into a nationally recognised dairy brand focused on premium and value-added dairy segments, supported by a fully automated processing plant in Perundurai, Tamil Nadu. The Davos MoU marks a strategic shift beyond southern India into the western dairy market, where competition and consumption are both rising.

The investment reflects a broader industry trend toward scaling dairy processing infrastructure to meet evolving consumer preferences and capitalise on India’s growing dairy demand. Analysts see this expansion as a notable step in Milky Mist’s trajectory, enhancing its capacity to compete with established players while reinforcing integrated procurement and processing within India’s dynamic dairy sector.
