Governor Acharya inaugurates a critical two-day conclave, targeting economic growth, rural employment, and milk self-sufficiency through the cooperative model.

A significant two-day conclave on the Development of Dairy, Animal Husbandry, and Cooperatives was recently inaugurated by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in Guwahati. This high-level event, organized collaboratively by the Governor’s office, the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), and relevant state departments, brought together a crucial cross-section of dairy industry leaders: scientists, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and farmers. The core objective is to deliberate on sustainable pathways to strengthen Assam’s livestock and cooperative sectors.

Governor Acharya emphasized that this initiative transcends mere production goals; it is a vital step toward building a self-reliant, sustainable, and inclusive Assam. He expressed confidence that the combined expertise of attendees—from rural communities to policymakers—will lay a strong foundation for both economic growth and social empowerment. This focus aligns with the broader national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, positioning the dairy and livestock sectors as key economic drivers.

The Governor highlighted that animal husbandry and dairy farming are deeply ingrained in Assam’s social and economic identity, serving as a traditional livelihood and ensuring nutritional security for countless rural families. Crucially, he noted that empowering these sectors directly uplifts rural communities, especially women, who form the backbone of the rural economy. This recognition underscores the sector’s dual role in both agricultural output and crucial social empowerment metrics.

Acharya lauded the state and national initiatives supporting this vision, pointing to schemes like the Assam Dairy Development Scheme and the expansion of the Purabi Dairy Cooperative Institutions, which have been instrumental in revolutionizing milk collection, processing, and marketing. Further national support comes from programs such as the National Livestock Mission and the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), which promote breed improvement, veterinary services, and entrepreneurship among rural youth.

In his concluding remarks, the Governor stressed the critical need for human resource development, arguing that technology must be matched by skilled and motivated people. He called for intensified focus on training youth and women in dairy management and veterinary care. The state’s ultimate, collective goal remains clear: to achieve self-reliance in milk and animal products, establishing the livestock sector as a major catalyst for rural industrialization and women-led enterprise.
