HP Unveils 250 Cr Mega Dairy Dhagwar Plant to Double Capacity

Himachal Pradesh invests heavily in modernizing the Dhagwar Milk Plant to 1.5 LPD, aiming to benefit 100,000 dairy farmers.

The state of Himachal Pradesh (HP) is embarking on a substantial dairy infrastructure overhaul, announcing plans to transform the existing Dhagwar Milk Plant in the Kangra district into the region’s most advanced processing unit. This move signals a resolute commitment from the state government to integrate modern technology and scale into its agricultural economy, addressing the long-term needs of its local dairy producers. The upgrade is designed to serve as a beacon for efficiency and quality standards across Northern India.

This ambitious expansion is backed by a massive investment of ₹250 crore, secured under the Central government’s National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD). The funding structure involves a shared contribution between the Centre and the State, underscoring the collaborative effort to strengthen the local supply chain. This capital injection is specifically aimed at critically expanding the plant’s operational bandwidth and technical capabilities.

The core of the upgrade involves doubling the plant’s processing capacity from its current 75,000 liters per day (LPD) to a robust 1.5 lakh LPD. This significant increase in scale is essential for handling the growing milk supply and stabilizing the region’s dairy market. The increased capacity is crucial for ensuring rapid chilling, efficient storage, and high-volume processing, essential steps for maintaining quality in a climate-diverse region.

Economically, the project is a direct intervention designed to elevate farmer profitability. Minister Chandra Kumar confirmed that the modernized facility is expected to directly benefit nearly 100,000 dairy farmers across ten districts of Himachal Pradesh. By providing a large-scale, reliable, and technologically advanced collection and processing outlet, the plant will help ensure better, more competitive market rates for their raw milk produce.

Beyond raw milk processing, the new Dhagwar unit is future-proofing its operations by incorporating facilities for producing various value-added dairy products, including milk powder and butter. This shift toward processed goods will boost the overall margin realized by the state’s co-operative system. The emphasis remains firmly on maintaining stringent standards of hygiene and quality control, positioning HP’s dairy products competitively within the national and potentially international marketplace.
