Project Ksheersagar 55 Milk Boost for 12,000 Indian Farmers

Abbott’s shared-value initiative drives supply chain resilience in India through financial literacy, animal husbandry, and cold storage investment.

To address the critical need for a dependable supply of high-quality milk for its nutritional products in India, the healthcare company Abbott launched “Project Ksheersagar” in 2022. This shared-value initiative partners with the international non-profit TechnoServe, aiming to transform the lives of dairy farmers while simultaneously fostering a sustainable raw milk supply chain in the country. This effort builds upon earlier projects implemented over the past decade to support Indian dairy farmers in states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

The project employs a comprehensive strategy that invests directly in the farmers’ business and financial acumen. Key support includes providing training in financial literacy and essential dairy farm management best practices. Furthermore, the initiative helps farmers establish bank accounts and pursue broader employment opportunities, creating a more robust economic foundation for their family businesses and securing opportunities for future generations.

In terms of direct farm productivity, Abbott and TechnoServe work closely with the participants to improve milk production by providing guidance on nutritious cattle feed and enhanced animal husbandry practices. The program’s investment has resulted in the establishment of 130 village-based milk collection centers, which ensure reliable cold storage. This infrastructure makes it easier for farmers to deliver quality milk and, critically, contributes directly to an increase in their income.

The initiative has yielded significant, measurable results for the local farming community. To date, Abbott has engaged over 12,000 dairy farmers. By implementing standardized dairy practices and improving animal care across more than 1,000 farms, the project has positively impacted around 51,000 dairy animals. Remarkably, these practices have led to a 55% increase in milk production and a 60% reduction in veterinary costs over the course of the project.

This successful strategic collaboration is central to Abbott’s long-term sourcing goals in the region. The company expects to source 60% of its milk powder needs from the farmers engaged in Project Ksheersagar, adding real value to its nutrition business while creating a more resilient and sustainable agribusiness ecosystem in India. TechnoServe notes that the adoption of standardized dairy practices has not only increased farmer incomes but also improved overall milk quality and productivity.
