Punjab Launches Monthly Milking Contest to Boost Yields

Government Incentivizes Dairy Farmers to Adopt Superior Genetics and Management Practices for Sector Growth 📈.

The Punjab Animal Husbandry Department is initiating a significant, year-long program to dramatically enhance livestock productivity across the state’s dairy sector. Commencing from October 6, 2025, the government will host “Block Level Milking Competitions- 2025-26” every second Monday of the month in all 154 blocks. This landmark move, announced by Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, is designed to actively incentivize excellence in dairy farming and directly contribute to a more robust and sustainable rural economy.

The primary objective of this monthly competition transcends mere prize distribution; it is a strategic mission to identify, reward, and actively propagate best practices in livestock management. By creating a platform for healthy competition, the government aims for a significant qualitative improvement in Punjab’s livestock. This holistic approach is crucial for dairy manufacturers and analysts, as it signals a state-led effort to standardize and improve the quality and consistency of raw milk supply across a major milk-producing region.

To ensure participation focuses on high-yielding breeds, the department has set strict minimum milking criteria across various categories. Specifically, Murrah and Murrah Graded Breed Buffaloes must achieve or above, while Nili Ravi and Nili Ravi Graded Breed Buffaloes must produce or more. For indigenous breeds, including Sahiwal and other cows, the benchmark is set at or above. This focus on verifiable production data encourages farmers to invest in better genetics and superior feeding practices.

The initiative is closely aligned with the broader vision of the Chief Minister, Bhagwant Singh Mann, to empower farmers and promote allied agricultural activities for sustainable economic growth. By rewarding dairy farmers who rear high-yielding animals, the competition directly contributes to increased farm income and improves the genetic pool of the state’s milch animals. The emphasis is on building a better genetics foundation to support the future scalability and efficiency of the region’s dairy operations.

Dairy farmers interested in leveraging this platform for recognition and prize money can obtain the necessary participation forms from local Veterinary Hospitals, as confirmed by Principal Secretary Rahul Bhandari. The competition is expected to be a major catalyst, not only promoting individual farmer excellence in management but also establishing local benchmarks that encourage the entire community to adopt the superior methods showcased by the winners, fostering a knowledge-sharing environment and pushing average yields higher.
