The cows are highly prized for their superior milk-producing capabilities, with an average yield of up to 30 liters per day. This is double the output of a typical Jersey cow found in the region. The cooperative’s support system underscores the importance of strategic sourcing and genetic advantage in boosting local dairy productivity.

To ensure a smooth process for its members, DKMUL provides comprehensive assistance. This includes arranging weekly trips to the Erode cattle fair and stationing veterinarians and officials on-site to verify the health and quality of the livestock. Furthermore, the union subsidizes the considerable costs involved, covering transportation and insurance for each cow, which can cost anywhere from Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh. This financial and logistical support is crucial for small farmers.

Beyond importing cows, DKMUL is also exploring advanced technological solutions to bolster milk production. The union is actively promoting the use of embryo transfer technology, offering it at highly subsidized rates to farmers. This initiative, combined with the successful cow procurement program and better milk procurement pricing, is already showing tangible results. The cooperative has reported a significant 16% increase in daily milk collection in the current financial year.
