Union Minister urges Jammu & Kashmir to adopt successful dairy cooperative strategy, boosting milk production and farmer income.
A high-level meeting in Srinagar, co-chaired by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has set a new course for Jammu & Kashmir’s dairy sector. The Union Minister strongly urged J&K officials to replicate the highly successful Varanasi dairy cooperatives model. This strategic move aims to significantly boost milk production and ensure sustainable growth within the region’s agribusiness landscape, drawing lessons from a proven framework.
The emphasis on the Varanasi model stems from its demonstrated success in transforming local dairy economics. The Union Minister highlighted how Varanasi’s cooperative structure, coupled with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), led to a substantial increase in milk production. Crucially, it also generated additional income for dairy farmers through the efficient utilization of cattle waste, showcasing a holistic approach to rural economic development and resource management within the dairy industry.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah underscored J&K’s immense potential in strengthening its traditional sectors, including agriculture, horticulture, livestock, fisheries, and tourism. He specifically noted the pressing need for organized processing and value addition, particularly in emerging areas like trout production. The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of achieving self-sufficiency in meeting domestic demand for essential products such as mutton, aligning with broader goals of regional food security.
A tangible outcome of the high-level review meeting was the virtual inauguration of a new 50,000 liters per day Ultra High Temperature (UHT) Milk Plant in Jammu. This modern facility is a key step towards enhancing processing capabilities. Furthermore, the meeting concluded with a firm resolution to implement joint strategies focused on infrastructure expansion, establishing robust market linkages, fostering entrepreneurship development, and revitalizing existing cooperatives across J&K.
This concerted effort to adopt the Varanasi cooperative model signifies a strategic push to empower dairy farmers and strengthen the entire dairy value chain in Jammu & Kashmir. By focusing on collective action, value addition, and efficient resource utilization, the initiative aims to drive sustainable growth, improve livelihoods, and ensure the region’s contribution to India’s overall milk production capacity, offering a blueprint for other developing dairy sectors.
