The Chamarajanagar Milk Union (Chamul) has increased milk procurement price by Rs 4 per litre, benefiting nearly two lakh farmers supplying milk to 461 primary milk cooperative societies.
The revised price will take effect from April 1. Currently, the milk union pays Rs 31.20 per litre of milk; now it will pay Rs 35.20 per litre. From April 1, farmers will receive a total of Rs 40.20 per litre, including Rs 5 incentives per litre provided by the state govt to milk producers.
Chamul termed this announcement as a Ugadi gift to farmers. The decision comes close on the heels of the state govt’s decision to increase Nandini milk prices by Rs 4 per litre, also with effect from April 1.
Chamul procures 2.51 lakh litres of milk daily from all its milk producers through 461 primary milk cooperative societies. Of this, the milk union sells 65,000 litres of milk through its Nandini milk outlets, other authorised agencies, and shops across the district, including neighbouring Kerala and Tamil Nadu state distributors.
It also uses 16,845 litres of milk daily for the production of curd and buttermilk, and 64,589 litres of milk for the production of ultra-high temperature milk (pasteurised milk). The remaining milk is used for the production of milk powder, which is also supplied to govt schools for the implementation of Ksheera Bhagya free milk distribution to school students, Nandini brand sweets, and other products.
“Apart from extending these revised prices, our milk union is also encouraging farmers to engage in dairy farming by offering health insurance for cows, personal insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh to dairy farmers, Rs 15,000 to be released for its milk producers for their funeral expenses, Rs 3 lakh grants to be sanctioned for the construction of cattle sheds through Karnataka Milk Federation, free hostels for girls, and children of milk producers studying in cities and towns, and several other facilities,” he said.
“In recent years, private dairy farmers have also attracted farmers to supply milk to them by offering higher prices per litre of milk supply. The milk union must also come up with more schemes and offer decent prices for milk supply to farmers to attract them to Chamul,” said Baradanapura Nagaraj, Chamarajanagar Farmers’ Federation vice-president, to TOI.
