FDA seizes 239kg of suspected substandard paneer in Nashik

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has seized and destroyed 239kg of adulterated paneer during its special drives to ensure substandard foods are not sold in the markets ahead of Ramzan and Gudi Padwa.

“Based on the inputs we received, our team raided premises in the Ambad area from where 239kg of substance claimed to be paneer was seized. The sample of the same has been sent to the laboratory for testing,”

Mahesh Chaudhary, joint commissioner of FDA, said. Chaudhary said the material claimed to be paneer was to be used to prepare food articles.

The officials said during the primary test of iodine, the substance turned blue, indicating that it contained starch.

“Since the food item was unfit for consumption, a sample of the material was sent to the laboratory for testing. The remaining material was destroyed,” he said.

“It is mandatory to mention details of the manufacturer, expiry date, veg logo and rate, but no such thing was found on the seized material. The person could not produce the bills for the purchase. The material has to be transported and stored in a cool place. Neither the vehicle nor the premises had any cold storage facility, so the material was disposed of,” he said.
