FSSAI Reverses Decision on A1 and A2 Milk Products

A few days after it banned the sales of dairy products labeled as A1 and A2 milk, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has withdrawn its order.According to a statement by FSSAI, the issue will first be discussed with the industry people, experts and other stakeholders before taking a final call on it. Until then, the order by FSSAI for banning A1 and A2 milk products stands withdrawn.

Earlier, after its ultimatum to food business operators (FBOs) to exhaust all pre-printed packaging materials that claim ‘100 per cent fruit juices’ in their packaged juice products, the FSSAI had asked food businesses and e-commerce players, to remove labels indicating ‘A1’ and ‘A2’ types of milk and milk products from packaging.

This move by the authority had come after it found many labels and advertisements from food business operators (FBOs) as misleading which don’t comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Experts and the Indian Dairy Association had welcomed this move, trusting it would help in curbing unscientific claims about the superiority of A2 over A1 milk.

However, now, just a few days after the order, FSSAI has withdrawn its order.
