Dugdh Sangh plans to ramp up milk collection ahead of festivals

The dairy sector is anticipating a substantial surge in milk demand during the forthcoming festive season, prompting Indore Cooperative Dugdh Sangh to implement strategies to augment milk collection from cooperatives.

Daily milk consumption at the Indore Cooperative Dugdh Sangh, which markets packaged milk under the brand name Sanchi, has escalated to approximately 2.35 lakh litre, in contrast to the procurement of 2.40 lakh litre, leaving a nearly negligible surplus with the milk union.

Until July, the Indore milk union had a daily surplus of around 30,000 litre of milk.

“We are undertaking concerted efforts to enhance milk procurement in preparation for the festive season. We anticipate a considerable increase in demand over the coming months due to the festivals,” said Deepak Sharma, CEO of Indore Cooperative Dugdh Sangh.

The cooperative has planned to added more dairy farmers to its fold ahead of festive season for increasing milk collection.

In August, until Rakshbandhan, which was on Aug 19, Indore Cooperative Dugdh Sangh recorded sales of 24,000 kg of byproducts, including peda, gulabjamun, mawa and other items.

Sharma mentioned that the sales of byproducts are projected to reach close to 26,000-27,000 kg by Aug-end.

Indore Dugdh Vikreta Sangh, an association of dairy owners and loose milk suppliers, milk consumption is expected to increase by at least 1.5-2 lakh litre in the coming months due to heightened demand from sweets shops and households.

“The market is currently stable, but, demand of milk is poised to rise in the coming months because a substantial portion is utilized in the production of sweets, consumed by hotels, and household consumption also increases. The preparation of mawa will commence in the coming weeks at sweets shops, further driving up the demand for milk,” says Indore Dugdh Vikreta Sangh president Bharat Mathurawala.

Daily milk collection in Indore is approximately 12-12.5 lakh litre, compared to the estimated consumption of around 12 lakh litre, according to the association.
