Madras high court has granted bail to two men who were arrested for misappropriating 1.17 lakh from a milk producers cooperative society in Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district.

The court was hearing the bail petition filed by P Paneerselvam and S Kaliraj.

According to the prosecution, officials from Aavin recently conducted an audit of the milk producers cooperative societies in the district.

They discovered that 1.17 crore was misappropriated from a society in Rajapalayam during 2020-21. Based on a complaint lodged by Aavin officials, the Virudhunagar district economic offences wing (EOW) registered the case. During investigation, officials found that members of the society misappropriated the money under the guise of making awareness advertisements during the Covid-19 pandemic without the knowledge of the officials. The petitioners and other accused were arrested.

Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy granted bail to the petitioners on certain conditions. The judge directed Panneerselvam to deposit 2 lakh and Kaliraj to deposit 3.50 lakh to the credit of the crime number before the trial court.
