The decision was taken in a meeting held on Sunday at the Verka head office in Chandigarh. During the meeting, Randhawa said bulk milk coolers would initially be provided to 100 progressive dairy farmers, giving more than 500 kg milk to Verka on a daily basis, on subsidy.
According to the cooperation minister, to maintain the quality of raw milk, about 1,200 bulk milk coolers of different capacities have been provided to registered milk cooperative societies affiliated to Verka milk plants operating under Milkfed over the last 20 years.
He said these bulk milk coolers have brought about great improvement in the quality of milk, which in turn, has helped improve quality of products and increase sales.
Besides milk producers’ cooperative societies, about 2,300 progressive dairy farmers are directly supplying milk to Verka milk plants in Punjab. Milkfed managing director Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said progressive dairy farmers interested in getting benefits under the scheme can contact the general manager or manager, milk procurement of the Verka milk plant concerned.
