Lucknow: The Gorakhnath Peeth in Gorakhpur has a long-standing tradition of cow protection, a tradition exemplified by its well-established Gaushala. Known for conserving indigenous breeds of cattle, this Gaushala is a prime example of the efforts to preserve the native cow species. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is also the head of the Gorakhnath Peeth, cow protection has become a top priority. This includes offering various incentives and facilities for cow herders, ensuring the protection of homeless cattle, and promoting their well-being through regular vaccinations and breed improvements.
Thanks to these continuous efforts, Uttar Pradesh is on track to become the number one producer of cow’s milk in the country, surpassing Rajasthan, which currently holds the top position. Uttar Pradesh is ranked second, with the latest data indicating a population of approximately 6.6 million dairy cows producing 5.29 million tons of milk annually. Of this, 1.7 million tons are from foreign breed cows, while the remaining 4.2 million tons come from a mix of indigenous and hybrid breeds. Indigenous cow milk is known to be of superior quality, as these breeds have adapted over thousands of years to India’s climate, making them easier to maintain.
The state’s focus on preserving and promoting indigenous cattle will soon receive a boost with the establishment of Veterinary Colleges in Gorakhpur and Bhadohi. These colleges will serve as research hubs, benefiting livestock farmers in Uttar Pradesh, especially in the eastern districts. This research is expected to significantly enhance the productivity of indigenous cows.
In this context, Uttar Pradesh’s contribution to national milk production, currently at 16%, is expected to increase, positioning the state as the country’s leader in milk production from indigenous cattle. Recently, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site of the upcoming Gorakhpur Veterinary College, providing key directives for its development. He emphasized the importance of making the college a pilot project, ensuring ample land for animal care and grazing, and creating a “Gau Sarovar” (cow sanctuary).
