Surplus daily milk output touches 1L litre

A more than 8 per cent jump in milk collection amid a decline in demand from retailers and institutional buyers is leaving close to a lakh litre of surplus milk everyday in Indore, said the association of private milk suppliers.

A temporary halt to weddings during month-long ‘malmas’ starting December 16 considered not ideal for auspicious activities like marriages has dampened the demand of milk in the retail market, said the association.

Milk collection in Indore by the Indore Dugdh Vikreta Sangh, an association of dairy owners, milk suppliers and traders, has jumped to over 13 lakh litre a day up from 12 lakh litre in October though demand has not kept pace with the collection, said milk suppliers.

Bharat Mathurawala, president, Indore Dudgh Vikreta Sangh said, “There is a drop of around 10 per cent in milk sales in Indore due to decline in the retail purchases. Weddings had pushed the demand high for milk but the halt in weddings has now damped the sales. Daily surplus of milk has reached around 1 lakh liter in the city.”

The surplus is moved to chilling stations for storage while some portion is used for making crème, sweets and other by-products.

Daily collection of packaged milk by Indore Cooperative Dugdh Sangh has also touched 3.80 lakh litres in the flush season and is expected to rise further during the peak flush season in December and January.
