Small dairy co-ops want Aavin to own BMC

Small milk cooperative societies in Madurai have requested the transfer of bulk milk coolers (BMC) ownership from larger cooperatives to the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (Aavin), reports the New Indian Express.

They claim commissions deducted by larger units and insufficient incentives from Aavin are issues. Over 870 milk cooperatives are registered in Madurai, with 51 BMCs established to collect milk.

Vadikovil Milk Cooperative Society president V Govinda Pandian stated that while BMCs prevent spoilage, larger cooperatives charge Rs 1-2 per litre for maintenance, reducing farmers’ earnings. Aavin officials acknowledge operational challenges but deny major issues.
