Here is how the con game unfolded: A company named ‘Jenny Milk’ promised farmers jaw-dropping profits by getting them to invest in donkey farming. The company’s sales pitch was: “Invest Rs 3 lakh, we’ll give you three lactating donkeys and you’ll be making Rs 2,350 per litre of donkey milk!” A total of 318 farmers fell for the scheme, eagerly shelling out cash for the ‘prized’ donkeys. The amount they collectively paid added to a whopping Rs 10 crore.

According to Vijaynagara superintendent of police Shrihari Babu, Jenny Milk promoters, led by its MD Nuthalapati Murali, had set up a branch in Hospet in May 2024 and began promoting the business among farmers. “The company distributed three lactating donkeys and three foals to every farmer who signed the contract. Besides, they also provided bottles for the collection of donkey milk and a refrigeration unit to store the milk,” Babu said.

With word spreading fast, more people started queuing up before the company, eager to make payment and sign agreements. “If one litre of donkey’s milk could fetch us Rs 2,000, what else does one need to lead a royal life,” was the thought that ran in the minds of the farmers. However, not many were enthused. Some farmer groups raised the red flag over the cost of the donkeys, which were being sold at Rs 1 lakh per donkey when the market price was only around Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000.

The cops, who were alerted about the donkey business, started investigations and found that the company had not obtained any trade licence from the local municipality. “Close on the heels of the controversy, the municipality authorities sealed the company office at PKV Plaza in Hospet. Following the crackdown, Jenny Milk promoters, including its MD, manager, and the supervisor, went missing. A complaint was registered on Sept 19,” the SP added.

Soon, a special team headed by Additional SP Saleem Pasha was formed to investigate and nab the absconding accused. “Our team traced the accused to Andhra Pradesh, and all of them were arrested on Monday (Oct 7). The arrested accused include MD Murali, 43, and a resident of Nellore, manager Kavalapalli Umashankar Reddy, 33, from YSR district (erstwhile Kadapa district), and supervisor Syed Mohammed Gouse, 27, from Mamilla Mandalam in Kadapa,” he said.
