The Silchar facility, located in Gungoor, has been revived and upgraded to handle an initial processing capacity of around 20,000 litres per day. Officials highlighted that the plant will supply pasteurised and packaged milk to consumers in Barak Valley, improving access to hygienically processed dairy products while enhancing cold chain integration in the region.

The expansion is expected to create stronger linkages with local dairy farmers, offering them structured procurement systems, timely payments and improved price transparency. By integrating producers into an organised cooperative model, Purabi Dairy aims to boost rural incomes and stabilize the regional milk economy, aligning with broader dairy development objectives in Assam.

Industry observers note that this development comes at a time when India’s eastern and northeastern dairy markets are witnessing rising demand for packaged milk and value-added dairy products. The Silchar plant is positioned to support both consumption growth and future product diversification, reinforcing Assam’s ambition to expand its dairy footprint beyond traditional strongholds.
