Purabi Dairy launches Silchar plant, expanding milk processing capacity and strengthening Assam’s Barak Valley dairy market.
Purabi Dairy Expands with Silchar Plant Launch

Formal entry into Barak Valley boosts Assam’s milk processing capacity and farmer market access.

Assam’s cooperative dairy brand Purabi Dairy has officially entered the Barak Valley market with the inauguration of a milk processing plant in Silchar, marking a strategic expansion into southern Assam. The launch signals a strengthening of the state’s dairy infrastructure and a move to formalize milk procurement and distribution in a region previously dependent on fragmented supply channels.

The Silchar facility, located in Gungoor, has been revived and upgraded to handle an initial processing capacity of around 20,000 litres per day. Officials highlighted that the plant will supply pasteurised and packaged milk to consumers in Barak Valley, improving access to hygienically processed dairy products while enhancing cold chain integration in the region.

The expansion is expected to create stronger linkages with local dairy farmers, offering them structured procurement systems, timely payments and improved price transparency. By integrating producers into an organised cooperative model, Purabi Dairy aims to boost rural incomes and stabilize the regional milk economy, aligning with broader dairy development objectives in Assam.

Industry observers note that this development comes at a time when India’s eastern and northeastern dairy markets are witnessing rising demand for packaged milk and value-added dairy products. The Silchar plant is positioned to support both consumption growth and future product diversification, reinforcing Assam’s ambition to expand its dairy footprint beyond traditional strongholds.

For dairy manufacturers, supply chain planners and agribusiness analysts, Purabi Dairy’s Barak Valley entry represents a case study in regional dairy capacity building. Investments in processing infrastructure and farmer integration are increasingly central to India’s dairy growth strategy, particularly in under-served markets with significant production potential.
