The Left parties and various civic associations protested against Vijaya Dairy’s decision to increase the price of milk by Rs 2 per litre in the city on Wednesday. According to the dairy co-operative, milk production is low and consumption is high from April to October.

Vijaya Dairy officials said the cost of fodder and procurement have increased in the last year, forcing them to hike price.

CPI city secretary G Koteswara Rao said the cooperative has increased the price three times within one year.

“Milk is an essential commodity. Government should support cooperative dairies to avoid losses. With no support from the government, cooperative dairies are adding a huge burden on public. Milk price increased by Rs.6 per liter in the last one year,” said Koteswara Rao.
