In a promising boost to Odisha’s dairy sector, the state government’s Go-Palan Yojana (GPY), launched under the Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana (MKY), has shown strong early success.
Over the past three months, approximately 1,000 high milk-yielding cows have been inducted from outside the state, significantly enhancing local dairy productivity.
The initiative, which supports farmers in acquiring superior dairy breeds, has seen rapid progress, with cattle being brought in from outside the state—primarily from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu.
The Go-Palan Yojana aims to transform the livelihoods of small-scale dairy farmers in the state by facilitating the procurement of cows that yield a minimum of 10 litres of milk per day, with a subsidy of up to 70% on the project cost. By engaging private suppliers and enabling farmers to select cows of their choice, officials have ensured transparency and better outcomes for beneficiaries.
The initiative is being actively promoted at the highest level, with approval letters issued by the Minister of Fisheries & Animal Resources Development, Gokulananda Mallick, and Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar Vashishth during the recently held Matsya-Pranee Samavesh Odisha (MPSO)–2025. With high-quality cows now reaching remote areas, the program is gaining traction as a potential game-changer for Odisha’s dairy economy.
This swift execution is encouraging youth, cattle keepers, and livestock farming enthusiasts across the state to adopt dairy farming with greater confidence.
One standout example is Kandhamal district, which has become the first to successfully implement GPY projects for three beneficiaries—each of them women dairy farmers. The milestone highlights the scheme’s inclusive vision, focusing on both economic development and gender equity.
With high-yielding cows now reaching even remote areas, the Go-Palan Yojana is being seen as a potential game-changer in transforming Odisha’s rural economy.
