OMFED & NDDB Pact Set to Double Milk Production, Boost Rural Incomes.
In a landmark initiative poised to transform Odisha’s dairy sector, a significant pact between the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) aims to empower an astounding 1.5 million (15 lakh) dairy farmers across the state. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced this ambitious collaboration, signaling a strong governmental push towards boosting dairy production and improving rural livelihoods within the region’s agribusiness.
Central to this transformative agreement is the provision of high-yielding cattle to local dairy farmers. The NDDB will supply approximately 4,000 top-tier cows, including renowned breeds such as Gir and Sahiwal, alongside other high-performing cross-bred varieties. This strategic infusion of superior genetics is designed to significantly enhance milk yield per animal, directly contributing to increased overall milk production and economic benefits for individual dairy producers.
Beyond just animal supply, the pact also emphasizes sustainable practices within dairy farming. With assistance from the NDDB, a dedicated cow dung gas plant will be established. This innovative facility will serve a dual purpose: generating clean fuel for energy needs and producing valuable organic fertilizer. Such initiatives promote a circular economy model, reducing environmental impact while simultaneously providing additional income streams and supporting sustainable dairy development.
The government has set ambitious targets for milk production growth in Odisha. The current output of 72 lakh litres is projected to more than double, reaching 165 lakh litres by 2036. Looking further ahead, the long-term vision aims for a monumental increase to 274 lakh litres by 2047. These targets underscore the state’s commitment to becoming a major player in India’s dairy industry and ensuring food security through increased domestic supply.
For the international dairy community and development analysts, this OMFED-NDDB pact in Odisha serves as a compelling model for large-scale rural empowerment through dairy sector development. It demonstrates how strategic partnerships, focused investment in improved livestock, and the integration of sustainable technologies can drive substantial growth in milk output and uplift millions of dairy farming households, contributing significantly to dairy economics and rural prosperity in developing regions.
