History of National Milk Day

Dr. Verghese Kurien, born on November 26, 1921, in Calicut, Madras Presidency (now Kozhikode, Kerala), is known as the Father of the White Revolution in India. His journey in the dairy industry began after returning from the USA, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, which later evolved into the renowned brand Amul.

The White Revolution, spearheaded by Dr. Kurien, was a movement that transformed India’s dairy sector through ‘Operation Flood.’ This initiative, implemented in three phases from 1970 to 1996, revolutionized milk production in India. It focused on creating a nationwide milk grid, enhancing milk production, and ensuring fair prices for farmers. This movement not only made India self-sufficient in milk production but also empowered millions of dairy farmers, especially women, across the country.
