Karnataka Milk Federation rolls out AI tech to automate crate tracking and boost dairy operational accuracy.

Karnataka Milk Federation’s flagship dairy brand Nandini is harnessing artificial intelligence to upgrade its product counting systems across key processing plants. The AI solution is designed to automate the tracking of milk and dairy product crates — a task historically done manually — to improve precision in inventory and dispatch operations.

The new AI-based counting technology will be introduced at three major facilities under the Bengaluru Milk Union Limited (BAMUL) network: the Bengaluru Dairy, Kanakapura Dairy and Hosakote Dairy. These units handle a large portion of Milkfed’s packing and distribution, making them ideal first implementation sites to test scalability and performance.

By using machine vision and counting algorithms, the system will automatically detect, tally and record dairy items such as milk packets, curd cups, and other products during packing and dispatch stages. This automation is expected to reduce human error, speed up operations, and lower labor costs, strengthening both inventory management and data reliability.

Senior KMF officials say this AI rollout reflects the cooperative’s commitment to innovation and digital transformation within dairy supply chains. Beyond basic counting, future integration with broader operational systems — including real-time analytics and traceability tools — could further enhance quality control, reconciliation and audit accuracy across production lines.

For dairy producers and industry analysts, Nandini’s adoption of AI underscores a growing trend toward smart automation in dairy operations, where technology is leveraged to optimize efficiency and drive cost savings. As digital solutions permeate processing, packaging and logistics, cooperatives like KMF are positioning themselves to compete more effectively with private sector players.
