Several social media posts have gone viral in the recent months, pointing out the “expensive” lifestyle in Bengaluru.
While the Karnataka capital city has been one of the most expensive cities in India in the past few decades, the recent price hike in some of the daily need products and services has added to the financial burden on the residents. In the past few months, the residents have experienced price hikes in transportation, milk, fuel, and food, making it harder for the residents to manage their finances.
Namma Metro Fare Hike
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) in February announced the revised pricing structure, confirming the surge in Namma Metro fares. The announcement stated that the maximum fare was increased to Rs 90 from Rs 60; apart from this, the minimum balance required on smart cards was increased from Rs 50 to Rs 90.
While the authority did a little revision after protests from the commuters, the price hike has reportedly affected the residents as there was a decline in the number of metro users after the price hike was announced.
BMTC Bus Fare Surge
Earlier in January, the Karnataka government approved a 15 per cent hike in fares for the state transport corporations, leading to costlier bus rides in the city. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) announced that while the price of the daily pass increased from Rs 70 to Rs 90, the weekly pass got costlier by Rs 50.
Nandini Milk Prices Hike
The Nandini Milk, a household product in Bengaluru, has also gotten costlier in the past few months. The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) announced that there will be a further hike in the prices by Rs 4 per litre from April 1, leading to costlier dairy products too. Apart from this, the price was also hiked by Rs 3 per litre in July 2023 and Rs 2 per litre in June 2024.
