Mysuru: For the first time in the state, Mysuru Milk UnionLimited (Mymul) has decided to bring all 65,000 milk producers to avail themselves livestock insurance for their cattle.
Until recent years, Mymul funded 50% of the annual premium payment amount for each cattle and collected the remaining 50% from the milk producers.
Out of the Rs 550 annual premium amount, including other service charges, it collected Rs 275 from milk producers.
As only 10,000 milk producers registered for this insurance cover, Mymul has now extended free insurance cover to all its 65,000 dairy farmers to avail themselves of the benefit. The insurance cover not only offers financial protection against losses due to death or disability of livestock, but also covers accidental deaths, disease, and surgical intervention.
This has come as a huge relief for dairy farmers of the district. It will be benefiting about one lakh families involved in dairy farming across the district.
Farmers must pay just Rs 50 service charges to insure their cattle. The insurance cover is valid for three years, and farmers must renew it once every three years. Mymul has introduced this livestock insurance cover to protect the farmers in case of accidental death to their animals.
Mats, grass cutters will be distributed Mymul managing director Suresh Naik said that the milk union has also decided to distribute mats, grass cutters, and other machines at 50% subsidised prices for milk producers, apart from bringing all 65,000 milk producers to avail themselves of free insurance cover for their livestock.
In 2017, Mymul procured 5.5 lakh litres of milk from dairy farmers through its 1,105 primary milk producers’ cooperative societies. The daily milk procurement reached 7.5 lakh litres by 2022.
Mymul’s milk procurement doubled to 10 lakh litres by Dec 2024. Now, its daily milk procurement has reduced to 9 lakh litres due to summer, leading to a scarcity of green fodder.Currently, Mymul is catering to three lakh litres of milk to meet its daily consumers by selling through its milk outlets spread across the city and district.
