Kerala dairy farmers receive critical fodder aid as Milma steps up support to strengthen regional milk production.

Milma, Kerala’s cooperative dairy federation, has disbursed a substantial ₹74.11 crore in fodder subsidies to dairy farmers in the Malabar region. The aid, announced by Milma chairman K.S. Mani, is intended to help offset rising input costs and ensure consistent milk production. This support, aimed at the 2023–24 fiscal year, covers both green fodder cultivation and cattle feed procurement under the Farmer Welfare Fund Scheme.

This initiative marks a proactive move by Milma to protect and empower dairy producers in northern Kerala, where fluctuating feed prices and monsoon variability pose ongoing challenges. With this financial backing, farmers are expected to improve cattle nutrition, boost yields, and stabilize their income amid an increasingly competitive dairy market.

The Chairman emphasized that this support demonstrates Milma’s deep commitment to the sustainability of its dairy supply chain. By easing the burden of feed expenses, the cooperative seeks to promote self-reliance and help small-scale farmers maintain herd productivity. This is especially vital for rural households that depend heavily on dairy as a primary income source.

Milma’s regional unit, the Malabar Regional Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union (MRCMPU), has been at the forefront of implementing welfare schemes that directly benefit producers. The fodder aid package complements ongoing efforts to increase milk procurement and improve value chain efficiency across the region. According to Milma, such targeted financial assistance is essential to reduce farmer distress and enhance overall dairy resilience.

As global feed costs rise and climate stress impacts fodder availability, strategic interventions like Milma’s fodder subsidy play a key role in ensuring long-term dairy viability. The initiative also signals how cooperatives can lead with impactful, farmer-first solutions in emerging dairy economies.
