The Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Milma) in Ernakulam saw a sharp surge in demand for cakes this Christmas season, selling over 50,000 packs of 400 gm cakes. This is more than double the usual sales of around 20,000 to 22,000 packets during the festive period, said M.T. Jayan, chairman of the regional union, which covers Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki districts.
Mr. Jayan said that the union’s Chalakkudy bakery stands out as the only facility of its kind within the milk cooperative sector. The bakery’s cakes, bread, and buns saw spiralling demand in the lead-up to Christmas. He added that despite ramping up production, the cooperative could not meet the surge in demand towards the final days of the festive season.
The Ernakulam regional union currently sells approximately 4.25 lakh litres of milk daily. However, there is a significant gap between local procurement and sales, with around 1.5 lakh litres of daily demand being fulfilled through non-local sources.
Meanwhile, the Ernakulam district dairy conference has been rescheduled to January 2. The event, originally set for December 28, was postponed following the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The conference will take place at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School premises under the aegis of the Thirumaradi Dairy Cooperative.
Minister for Dairy Development J. Chinchurani will inaugurate the conference. The event will feature a dairy exhibition, cultural programmes, and a ceremony to honour veteran dairy farmers, organisers said.
