Fraudster posing as military personnel swindles dairy supplier of Rs 1.30 lakh in sophisticated digital scam.
A chilling incident of digital fraud has rocked Mumbai’s dairy community, as a milk vendor, Nagraj Medabojan, fell victim to a sophisticated scam, losing a staggering Rs 1.30 lakh. The deception began when a fraudster contacted Medabojan via WhatsApp, cunningly posing as an army officer named Satish Kumar. The imposter claimed his unit required a month-long daily supply of milk and curd while ostensibly camping at the Mumbai University’s Kalina campus, preying on the trust often associated with military personnel.
To solidify the elaborate ruse and gain the vendor’s confidence, the fraudster even initiated a video call with Medabojan, appearing convincingly dressed in an army uniform. Further cementing the illusion of legitimacy, the accused transferred a small sum of Rs 10 to Medabojan’s Google Pay account, instructing him to verify the credit. This initial small transaction served as a psychological anchor, building a deceptive foundation of trust before the larger fraud unfolded.
The pivotal moment of the scam involved the fraudster cunningly convincing Medabojan to enable WhatsApp’s screen-sharing feature on his phone. This critical step provided the accused with unauthorized access to the vendor’s device. Leveraging this access, the fraudster allegedly initiated two illicit transfers: Rs 65,000 from Medabojan’s Google Pay account and an additional Rs 55,000 directly from his bank account, culminating in the total loss of Rs 1.30 lakh.
Following the devastating realization of the fraud, Nagraj Medabojan promptly registered a First Information Report (FIR) with the Vakola Police. Authorities have swiftly launched an investigation into the matter and have taken immediate steps to inform the bank involved, requesting the freezing of the concerned account to prevent any further illicit transactions. This rapid response is crucial in cybercrime cases involving financial loss.
The police cyber team is now actively engaged in tracing the accused, employing specialized techniques to identify and apprehend the individual responsible for this calculated act of deception. This incident serves as a stark reminder for all agribusiness professionals and small businesses, particularly within the dairy sector, to exercise extreme caution against sophisticated digital scams that exploit trust and technological vulnerabilities.
