We have often heard not to drink unpasteurized milk or wash our hands when we touch egg shells – the reason for this hygiene check and food eating practice is to keep brucellosis at bay.

For the uninitiated, brucellosis is a bacterial infection that often spreads from animals to people and the most common way through which it can spread is when people eat raw or unpasteurized dairy products. It can also spread through air, and direct contact with infected animals.

How To Know If You Have Brucellosis? The obvious signs for this disease include fever, joint pain and fatigue. However, it takes a while to heal, and the infection can reoccur. It also happens sometimes that some symptoms don’t go away. Other signs of this ailment include sweats, malaise,anorexia, and headache. The disease is treatable by antibiotics.

The ailment is detectable by blood test. If blood samples, bone marrow or other body fluids carry bacteria samples it is confirmed that someone has this ailment.

The most important course of action is to avoid uncooked meat and unpasteurized milk, cheese or ice cream. If you are closer to the livestock, ensure that you have google and gloves so that the infection cannot enter through eyes or hands.
