The Surat District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd — Sumul sold over 3.5 lakh litres more milk in the city— on Wednesday, Shivaratri. A significant increase in buttermilk and curd sales was also recorded.

On average, Sumul’s daily milk sale is around 12.40 lakh litres, which went above 16 lakh litres on Wednesday.

Buttermilk sales, which normally are around 2.50 lakh litres a day, went above 3.25 lakh litres, while curd sales touched almost 48,000kg, compared to the usual 35,000kg on a normal day.

“The sales were expected to grow on Shivaratri and we planned for the increase in demand. Demand for buttermilk and curd seems to have increased due to the rising temperature,” said a Sumul official.

Milk and other milk product demand shoots up during festivals due to sweets and other food products prepared during celebrations and offerings in prayers. Milk products are a major part of food during fasting on Shivaratri as well. During the month of Shravan milk demand also shoots up.
