Milk collection stable in Indore despite seasonal challenges

Despite summers, milk collection in Indore region is stable, contrary to the usual seasonal drop of 4-5 per cent in daily collection as increase in milk prices helped farmers purchase new cattle, according to the association of milk vendors and dairy farmers.

The collection of loose milk in Indore so far in April was recorded at around 12-12.5 lakh litre, compared to a seasonal drop of 11-11.5 lakh litre, according to the Indore Dugdh Vikreta Sangh.

Indore Dugdh Vikreta Sangh president Bharat Mathurawala said, “Unlike previous summers, this season, milk collection has not dropped so far and has remained almost stagnant at 12-12.5 lakh litre. This has happened because farmers are getting good remuneration from milk sales and this has helped many farmers buy new cattle.”

According to the association, which delivers milk to customers’ doorsteps twice a day, daily milk sales in the city are around 12.5 lakh litre. The association increased the price of milk by Rs 2 per litre due to the higher cost of cattle fodder from March 1, 2025.

Dairy owners expect the wedding season to boost milk demand in the coming weeks. “In weddings, milk demand goes up by caterers and hotels. We anticipate milk demand to go up, and with a sufficient supply of milk, there would not be any challenges,” said Ramesh Yadav, a dairy owner.
