Not only in appearance, but also in the milk of these cows is something special.
The breed name is ‘Sahiwal’. It is called Sahiwal because it comes from the Sahiwal region of India. There are 15 of this breed in the ‘Vrindavan’ cowshed in the heart of Ernakulam city. Ammu, a native of Ernakulam, and her husband Santhosh, a native of Bengaluru, run the cowshed on 14 cents of land on Divans Road.
Two cows were brought from Haryana four years ago. Sundari and Durga. The others are their children and grandchildren.
Sahiwal cows are an endangered breed. The couple consider raising cows more of a way of life than a source of profit. They also produce cooking gas from cow dung. Cow dung and cow urine are given free of cost to the needy. This couple, who also have farms in Mysore, also raise horses. Their wish is to start a farm of indigenous breeds like Vechur cow, Kasaragod dwarf, Punganur, and Gyr in Kerala.
Milk costs Rs. 150 per liter
Each cow produces 25-30 litres of milk per day. It is a light golden colored milk with medicinal properties. The price per litre is Rs. 150. Six cows are milked. City dwellers and Ayurvedic centres buy all the milk. The feed is maize, coconut-peanut cake, bran, etc. The cowshed is profitable even though it costs about Rs. 3 lakh per month, including the wages of the workers.
”We do not abandon the old cows or hand them over to the butchers. We take care of them until the end”
