New livestock, credit and processing schemes are accelerating dairy growth and rural jobs in Shangus–Anantnag East.

The government of Shangus–Anantnag East has intensified efforts to expand the dairy sector, reaching more than 800 beneficiaries over the past two years. The programme is designed to create self-employment opportunities and strengthen entrepreneurship among rural youth, while increasing milk production and farm incomes.

According to the Agriculture Production Department, several central and regional schemes are being used to modernize dairy farming in the constituency. Livestock productivity is being improved through artificial insemination under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, including the use of sexed semen and upgraded genetics. At the same time, vaccination and disease control measures are being rolled out under the National Animal Disease Control Programme to improve herd health and production efficiency.

The government is also supporting dairy entrepreneurs through the Integrated Dairy Development Scheme and the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme. Under these initiatives, farmers receive financial and technical support to establish dairy units, improve fodder production and increase milk yields. Training programmes under Krishonnati Yojana are also being offered to help producers adopt modern dairy management practices.

A major focus is being placed on strengthening the dairy value chain. Authorities are facilitating the installation of milk collection centres, Automatic Milk Collection Units, Bulk Milk Coolers and small processing plants. These facilities are expected to support production of value-added products such as dahi, paneer, ghee, butter, ice cream and khoa, creating new revenue streams for dairy farmers. The government is also encouraging the formation of cooperatives, farmer producer organizations and self-help groups to improve marketing and access to institutional support.

During the last two financial years, 434 farmers benefited from fodder development projects, six received assistance specifically for dairy development, 27 were covered under the Integrated Dairy Development Scheme and 394 gained access to dairy financing through the Kisan Credit Card programme. Officials say these measures have already improved dairy infrastructure at the grassroots level and generated new livelihood opportunities, with additional expansion planned in the coming years.
