Families using cattle-based biogas systems have avoided fuel shortages and rising cooking gas costs.
Dairy farming families in Karnataka who invested in biogas plants are emerging largely untouched by the ongoing LPG shortage affecting much of India. As supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions continue to hit cooking gas availability, households with access to cattle dung-based biogas have been able to maintain normal daily routines without depending on LPG cylinders.
For many rural dairy producers, biogas systems were originally installed as a way to manage waste from cattle sheds and reduce household fuel costs. Until recently, the gas produced from these plants was used only occasionally because LPG was widely available. Now, however, those same systems have become an essential energy source, allowing families to cook every meal without interruption.
The experience highlights the close connection between dairy farming and energy resilience. Dairy households that keep cows already have access to a steady supply of dung, making biogas a practical and low-cost alternative. In several villages, families report that the gas generated from farm waste is sufficient for all of their cooking needs, protecting them from long waits, rising prices and shortages in the commercial LPG market.
The shift also underlines the economic value of integrating renewable energy into dairy operations. Biogas is generally cheaper than LPG and can continue functioning even during broader supply chain disruptions. Some rural households are now using biogas full time, while keeping LPG cylinders only as a backup for emergencies or periods of higher demand.
For India’s dairy sector, the Karnataka example demonstrates how small-scale renewable energy investments can strengthen farm resilience. As input costs rise and fuel markets remain volatile, biogas could become an increasingly important tool for dairy families seeking lower costs, greater energy independence and more sustainable use of livestock waste.
