A long-established dairy farm operator in Chiba Prefecture will expand into India, with its population of more than 1.4 billion, where demand for dairy products is traditionally strong.

Akiba Bokujo Holdings has partnered with an Indian information technology (IT) startup to procure feed, raise dairy cows and produce products.

It also aims to share Japanese know-how with local small-scale dairy farmers with low productivity to help them boost income.

Akiba Bokujo was founded as a stock farm in 1887. The company, which has diversified into various areas, is known for tourist ranch Narita Dream Farm, which opened in the Chiba city of Narita in 1987 to mark the 100 years since the group’s foundation.

This spring, the Japanese company will launch an integrated facility that covers everything from dairy farming to product manufacturing in Bengaluru.

Using advanced technologies such as for remote management from Japan, it aims to deliver gelato and other products to luxury hotels in India in a bid to increase the brand value of its products first.

Meanwhile, Akiba Bokujo also hopes to popularize Japanese-style dairy farming know-how in India to help improve production efficiency at local dairy farms.

Akiba Bokujo President Hidetake Akiba believes that children will be freed from labor through such improvements, allowing them to “learn at school and gain knowledge and wisdom to get richer.”

Last month, the Japan Dairy Council, an industry group, warned that the ongoing decrease in dairy farmers in Japan is a “crisis undermining the production base of dairy farming.”

By expanding overseas, “we want to produce results,” Akiba said, showing his eagerness to play a pioneering role. He is also considering cooperating with Japanese dairy farmers to start joint projects in India.

“This is a positive and bright story,” a dairy council official said.
