Indonesia's agriculture ministry denies milk import plan

Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture has dismissed claims of a plan to import 1.8 million tons of milk from Vietnam to support President Prabowo Subianto’s Free Nutritious Meal Programme, Indonesia’s Business Post reported.

Instead, the ministry is encouraging foreign investment to strengthen the local dairy industry.

Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman confirmed that five international dairy companies from Qatar, Brazil, the US, and Vietnam have shown interest in investing in Indonesia’s dairy sector. “There are five companies. One from Qatar and two from Brazil. If I am not mistaken, one each from America and Vietnam as well,” Amran stated during a press conference in Jakarta.

To facilitate these investment opportunities, Amran plans to meet with the Vietnamese Ambassador on Friday, November 1, 2024, to discuss further collaboration in developing a dairy processing industry within Indonesia. “We have a lot of land, and we give them options,” he remarked. Potential locations for the dairy processing factories include Central Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Merauke in South Papua.

The Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with other relevant ministries and institutions to streamline the investment process. Amran emphasised the importance of providing a welcoming environment for investors, particularly within the agricultural sector. “The key is to provide comfort to investors, especially in the agricultural sector. We will oversee their entry,” he said.

Supporting the minister’s remarks, Moch Arief Cahyono, Spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, stated on Sunday that the ministry’s policy is not focused on dairy product imports but rather on increasing local production through foreign investment.

These investment efforts align with the government’s broader strategy to enhance domestic food production and maintain a steady supply of nutritious meals nationwide.
