India's first camel milk processing plant at Gujarat's Sarhad Dairy; only producer of Camel milk rajbhog ice cream in country

Gujarat’s Sarhad Dairy leads camel milk innovation and niche Rajbhog ice cream in a cooperative growth story.

Sarhad Dairy in Gujarat has established itself as India’s first camel milk processing plant, a unique facility that adds diversity to the country’s dairy sector by capturing a niche yet nutritionally rich product often dubbed the “white gold” of the Rann of Kutch. The plant features advanced camel milk deodorisation technology and has achieved organic certification, enhancing product quality and market appeal for this non-bovine dairy segment.

During the 2024–25 fiscal year, Sarhad Dairy’s camel milk procurement averaged 4,754 litres per day, with payments totaling about ₹8.72 crore made to over 350 camel farming families, strengthening livelihoods in pastoral communities and expanding income opportunities in a traditionally under-served livestock value chain.

The dairy operates on a cooperative model inspired by Amul, sourcing milk through four collection centres across Kutch district — Rapar, Nakhatrana, Gadhshisha and Kotda Athamana — while also managing broad operations that include bovine milk processing, cattle feed production and value-added ice cream output. Sarhad procures around 5.5 lakh litres of milk daily from some 80,000 producers, underpinning a robust rural dairy economy.

Sarhad Dairy’s camel milk initiative has also led to another industry first: the production of camel milk Rajbhog-flavoured ice cream, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024. Within a year, the plant launched 80 varieties and produced 24.52 lakh litres of this specialty ice cream, with peak dispatches of 58,000 litres, indicating growing product acceptance and market experimentation.

The cooperative’s broader performance remains strong, with a historic turnover above ₹1,200 crore in 2024–25, reflecting nearly 9.1 % year-on-year growth, and daily disbursements of around ₹3 crore to farmers. Sarhad’s model has drawn national and international recognition, being showcased by the Indian Dairy Federation and at global food expos, positioning camel milk innovation as a potential model for dairy diversification across the Asia-Pacific region.
