How FAME’s holistic approach to veterinary care, genetics, and direct market access is boosting productivity and farmer income across five states.
The Foundation for Advancement of Micro Enterprises (FAME), a pivotal ‘not-for-profit company,’ has engineered a large-scale transformation within India’s dairy sector, impacting over 200,000 rural farmers across five key states: Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jharkhand. This Dairy Development Program directly confronts systemic hurdles that limit profitability, specifically tackling poor livestock health management, restricted access to veterinary services, price exploitation by middlemen, and reliance on outdated farming methodologies. By doing so, FAME is successfully building sustainable and resilient dairy enterprises that structurally reinforce the stability of the rural economy.
The program’s core strategy centers on technical empowerment, providing farmers with enhanced skills in animal health, advanced nutrition, and modern breeding techniques. Operating extensively in over 300 villages across the five target regions, the initiative is designed to stimulate grassroots economic growth by strategically prioritizing underserved and resource-limited rural areas. This approach ensures that vital technical knowledge and accessible doorstep veterinary care, including necessary vaccination services, are delivered directly to the farmers who need them most.
FAME’s comprehensive strategy is structured around five strategic pillars, as detailed by Chairman Mr. Brij Mohan, who emphasized the commitment to integrating expertise, market access, and technology. These pillars include expert advisory and genetic enhancement delivered by certified veterinarians; free, timely doorstep veterinary services; the establishment of Milk Collection Centres (MCCs) in collaboration with leading manufacturers to ensure fair, quality-based pricing by eliminating intermediaries; FAME Service Centres supplying essential quality livestock inputs at wholesale rates; and targeted artificial insemination programs in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab aimed at driving herd genetic improvement and output enhancement.
The quantifiable impact of these holistic interventions is significant and data-driven, demonstrating robust outcomes for the beneficiaries. Independent assessments confirm that 89% of participating farmers have reported a reduction in disease incidence, while a considerable 63% are receiving demonstrably better milk prices. Overall, 74% of farmers have achieved tangible income growth. The success is best exemplified by farmer Vakil from Meerut, who, following FAME’s training, increased buffalo milk production from 8 to 10 liters daily, resulting in an additional monthly earning of ₹10,000–12,000, which has been directed toward family and business improvements.
Looking toward future sustainability, FAME employs a sophisticated ‘repeat–reinforce–renew’ framework, backed by continuous farmer engagement and proprietary digital tools, including the specialized Dairy App for real-time monitoring. These evidence-based methodologies ensure the long-term viability of the program. By focusing on skill development, market access, and social inclusion—especially for marginalized communities and women entrepreneurs—the foundation’s efforts are closely aligned with national objectives for rural and nutritional security, women’s empowerment, and the broader United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
