Annual review highlights record milk output, genetic advances, value-add infrastructure and farmer credit expansion under India’s Animal Husbandry & Dairying roadmap.
India’s livestock and dairy sector recorded significant expansion in 2025, strengthening its role in the national agricultural economy with a 12.8 % CAGR since 2014-15 and a 5.4 % annual growth in milk production from 146 MMT to nearly 248 MMT—solidifying India’s position as the world’s largest milk producer. Per capita milk availability reached 485 g/day vs. the global average of 328 g/day, underscoring robust domestic demand and production capacity.
Government-led schemes intensified focus on genetic improvement and breed conservation, launching the Regional Center of Excellence for Indigenous Breeds and establishing the North Eastern region’s first IVF laboratory, enabling better access to advanced reproductive technologies. Initiatives like the Surabhi Chayan Shrankhla performance recording program have identified superior germplasm across half a million animals to boost long-term productivity.
Under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), investments exceeding ₹4,100 crore were approved to expand milk procurement, processing, value addition and cooperative networks across 28 states and 3 Union Territories, strengthening infrastructure with new pooling points and enhanced testing laboratories—vital for quality and safety benchmarks in dairy processing.
The Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) consolidated value-added dairy, feed, vaccine production and breed improvement projects with a broad investment base, approving 465 projects worth ₹21,562 crore and offering favorable interest subventions—aimed at attracting private sector, MSME and cooperative participation in dairy and allied segments.
Crucially for grassroots dairy producers, over 45.6 lakh Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs) were issued to farmers within dairy cooperatives and Milk Producer Companies, expanding affordable credit access for working capital. Complementary livestock health initiatives including mass vaccinations and mobile veterinary units further buttressed on-farm productivity and animal well-being.
