New technology promises to double female calf production, empowering farmers and transforming the dairy sector.
In a landmark development for India’s dairy sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Sex Sorted Semen facility in Purnea, Bihar. This new station, a key component of the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, has been established with substantial central government funding of ₹10 crore. This strategic investment underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing the country’s livestock industry and directly benefiting a significant portion of its farming population. The facility’s annual capacity is projected at 5 lakh doses, a move set to significantly boost the region’s dairy potential.
A critical element of this new station is the implementation of an innovative, domestically-developed technology called ‘Gausort,’ which was officially launched on October 5, 2024. This groundbreaking technology is designed to make high-quality Sex Sorted Semen available to farmers in the Eastern and North-Eastern parts of India at a highly affordable price. By leveraging this indigenous solution, the government aims to enhance the region’s dairy productivity without imposing a heavy financial burden on local producers.
The Semen Station in Purnea is already a cornerstone of the national dairy infrastructure, recognized as one of the country’s largest government-run stations. With a current annual production of 50 lakh doses and having received significant central assistance of ₹84.27 crores, it serves as a vital hub for the Eastern and North-Eastern states. The new facility will complement its existing operations, further solidifying its role in developing and supporting the regional dairy economy.
At the heart of the initiative is Semen Sex-Sorting, a technology with the power to revolutionize dairy farming. This technique boasts an impressive 90% accuracy in pre-determining the birth of female calves. For dairy farmers, this is a game-changer, as it significantly increases the number of replacement heifers, which are crucial for milk production. This higher efficiency directly translates to reduced costs and a substantial increase in income for farmers, addressing a critical economic challenge.
The direct beneficiaries of this advanced technology will be India’s small and marginal farmers and landless laborers who are heavily dependent on dairy farming for their livelihood. By providing them with access to this high-yield technology, the government aims to increase their economic empowerment and resilience. The initiative sets a strong example of how targeted technological interventions can drive substantial socio-economic progress within the agricultural sector, serving as a model for other developing dairy economies globally.
