CM-Backed Milk Producer Org Transforms Lives in Gorakhpur Division.
A remarkable transformation is underway in India’s dairy sector, with a Chief Minister-backed initiative successfully empowering thousands of women farmers. The Baba Gorakhnath Kripa Milk Production Organisation (MPO) in the Gorakhpur division is driving a movement that has seen 1,445 dairy farmers, predominantly women, achieve the coveted “Lakhpati Didi” status – signifying an annual income exceeding ₹1 lakh (approximately $1,200-$1,500 USD). This program highlights the profound impact of organized agribusiness on rural livelihoods and dairy economics in the region.
Inspired by the success of the Balini Milk Producer Company in Bundelkhand, the Baba Gorakhnath Kripa MPO, established in 2022, has rapidly expanded its reach. As of July 2025, the initiative connects 25,000 women shareholders from 500 villages across the four districts of the Gorakhpur division: Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Deoria, and Kushinagar. This vast network contributes a substantial 62,000 litres of milk daily through over 500 milk pooling points, demonstrating significant scale in milk production.
The impact on women’s economic empowerment is particularly striking. Women associated with the MPO are now earning an average of ₹8,000 per month while working from their homes, providing them with financial independence and enhancing household stability. The ambitious goal is to further expand this network to include 40,000 women shareholders from 800 villages by March 2026, showcasing a commitment to widespread rural development through dairy entrepreneurship.
Beyond simply collecting milk, the MPO provides comprehensive support services crucial for modern dairy farming. These include the provision of quality cattle feed, access to artificial insemination, and essential training programs aimed at improving animal health and maximizing milk yield. Furthermore, the organization places a strong emphasis on enhancing the leadership skills of its women shareholders, fostering a more capable and self-reliant dairy community.
This successful model in Gorakhpur serves as a powerful testament to the potential of producer organizations and cooperative structures in driving economic upliftment within the agri-food sector. For the international dairy community, it offers valuable insights into effective strategies for empowering smallholder farmers, particularly women, to achieve significant financial gains and contribute to robust dairy supply chains through structured support and strategic investment in dairy development.
