New Delhi Resists Washington’s Push for Dairy, Agri & GM Crop Market Access.

As India–US negotiations enter a critical phase aiming for a mini trade deal, New Delhi has explicitly resisted U.S. demands for deeper access to its agriculture, dairy, and GM crop markets, warning that making concessions could derail the pact.

India’s negotiators, led by Commerce Department’s Rajesh Agrawal, have even extended their U.S. stay to press for multiple “red line” protections, signaling that any erosion of safeguard measures for sensitive sectors cannot be tolerated.

The stakes are high, as India faces the prospect of retaliatory U.S. tariffs (26 percent) re‑imposed from July 9, unless a deal is struck. While some tariffs have been reversed, unresolved duties on steel, aluminium, automobiles, and agri‑goods linger.

India is seeking balance in the agreement, demanding relief on market access, but also climate‑balancing concessions like visa facilitation and re‑establishing GSP status, making the outcome a multidimensional negotiation.

With fast‑approaching deadlines and limited policy space, the dairy sector—dominated by co‑ops and smallholders—stands at a diplomatic crossroads where protection of domestic stability outweighs export ambitions.
