PM Modi Launches Massive ₹1,166 Cr Investment Package to Boost Livestock Sector, Genetic Upgradation, and Rural Livelihoods.
The Indian government has announced a massive injection of capital into its livestock and dairy sectors, with projects valued at ₹947 crores ($114 million USD) being inaugurated and an additional ₹219 crore ($26.4 million USD) in projects having their foundation stones laid in New Delhi on October 11, 2025. These initiatives, representing a major package of investments in agribusiness and allied sectors, were launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The programs align with two new major agricultural schemes, the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana (PM-DDKY) and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, signaling a decisive commitment to rural economic strength and India’s goal of self-reliance.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the critical role of livestock and allied activities in uplifting rural livelihoods under the PM-DDKY. Highlighting past efforts, he noted that over 125 crore vaccines have been administered free of cost to protect animals from diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease. Under the new Yojana, further extensive animal health campaigns will be launched at the local level to ensure the continued health of the national herd and reduce financial anxieties for farmers. The strategy also promotes diversification beyond traditional farming, specifically encouraging animal husbandry, fisheries, and beekeeping for additional income, thereby empowering small farmers and landless families.
A key focus of the investment is advanced dairy technology and genetic upgradation. Under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), the North-Eastern Region received a major boost with the inauguration of its first Livestock IVF Laboratory in Guwahati, Assam, backed by an investment of ₹28.93 crore. Furthermore, the article detailed multiple major infrastructure projects inaugurated under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), including a 120 MT per day Milk Powder Plant and a 3.5 lakh litres per day UHT Plant for the Mehsana Milk Union, representing a colossal ₹460 crore investment.
The expansion of processing capacity is widespread across multiple states. Other NPDD projects include a 30 TPD Milk Powder Plant for the Indore Milk Union (₹76.50 crore) and a 25,000 liters per day UHT Plant for the Bhilwara Milk Union (₹46.82 crore). Further strengthening the physical network, the foundation stone was laid for a massive Integrated Dairy Plant and a 200 TPD Cattle Feed Plant in Andhra Pradesh, securing an investment of ₹219 crore. Additionally, 10 projects worth ₹303.81 crore were inaugurated through the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) to fortify national capacity for feed, milk, and animal product processing.
Finally, the government addressed the crucial aspect of last-mile delivery of breeding services. The event marked a major milestone in improving artificial insemination coverage nationwide with the official induction of over 38,000 MAITRIs (Multipurpose Artificial Insemination Technicians in Rural India). Specifically, 2,000 newly trained MAITRIs from all districts of Uttar Pradesh received certificates from the Prime Minister, demonstrating a clear commitment to leveraging trained personnel and technology for the sustained genetic upgradation and integrated development of India’s vital dairy industry and allied sectors.
