Chamul’s daily milk procurement surpasses 3 lakh litres this month

Mysuru: Chamarajanagar Milk Union Limited (Chamul) has surpassed three lakh litres of daily milk procurement this month.

This is a 15% increase over last year’s yield which is attributed to good rainfall, availability of fodder, and a rise in dairy farming.

Chamul operates 496 milk procurement cooperative societies with 33,000 shareholders in the district.

Chamul is ranked ninth among the milk unions in the state in milk procurement. Despite stiff competition from private dairies, milk procurement has increased every year.

According to taluk-wise data, Gundlupet taluk milk producers cooperative societies supplies 88,000 litres of milk to Chamul, which was the highest, which is followed by Hanur (82,000 litres), Chamarajanagar (80,000 litres), Kollegal (40,000 litres) and Yelandur (10,000 litres).

Usually, Hanur taluk milk unions have been supplying 60,000 to 65000 litres of milk daily, but it increased to 82,000 during July, creating a record of sorts in milk yield.

Speaking to TOI, Chamul managing director Rajkumar said the milk union has recorded milk procurement of 3 lakh litres during this month, which was the highest. “As govt has been providing incentives of Rs 7 per litre of milk supplied to milk producers, a large number of farmers are picking up dairy farming to increase their source of revenue. Besides, availability of green fodder during monsoon season has also contributed to an increase in daily milk procurement by the union,” he said.

Chamul president YC Nagendra said the milk union is focused on supplying quality milk to its consumers and help milk producers with insurance cover.
